Top 10 Tips to keep baby cool during the heatwave

Get your paddling pools at the ready… the heatwave is here & (apparently) set to stay! Last summer I was heavily pregnant & struggling to keep myself cool but this year is all about keeping Isla happy so here are the top ways to keep baby cool & happy in the heat…

  1. Keep baby out of direct sunlight as much as possible – find a shady spot to sit & make sure you get a sunshade or parasol for the pram while you’re out & about!
  2. Get your hands on the highest factor sunscreen that you can & COVER them in it! We have a sensitive skin Factor 50 for Isla & re-apply it regularly!
  3. Keep their fluid levels up – if they are over 6 months offering water regularly. You can make it fun by making your own fruity ice-lolly’s.
  4. Get the paddling pool out but make sure it’s in the shade! Set yourselves up for a day enjoying the garden & get out all the water toys to explore.
  5. Wide brim hats are a must – and if your little one is like Isla & keeps taking it off – try & get one with a fastening under the chin.
  6. At bed time try a cooler bath than usual but make it a quick one.
  7. Get a room thermometer and try to reduce the temperature well in advance of bed time.
  8. Remove any unnecessary bedding & keep clothes to a minimum. Check the thermometer to see what they should be in! I’ve included a helpful chart below…!
  9. Try to create a breeze in their room – we put a fan next to the window and put a bowl with ice packs in front of it which helped lower Isla’s room by 5 degrees!
  10. If they fall asleep in their pram keep it in the shade & make sure it is well ventilated – don’t cover it in a muslin or blanket as that can make the temperature soar dangerously high inside.

Moving into Isla’s room with GroBag

Ever since Isla was born I have always been very careful to follow the Lullaby Trust’s safe sleep guidance & now that she’s ready to move into her own room it’s more important than ever!

Incase you haven’t read up on the safest way to put your baby to bed, these are the current guidelines…

THINGS YOU CAN DO:

  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep
  • Keep your baby smoke free during pregnancy and after birth
  • Place your baby to sleep in a separate cot or Moses basket in the same room as you for the first 6 months
  • Breastfeed your baby
  • Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress in good condition
THINGS TO AVOID:

  • Never sleep on a sofa or in an armchair with your baby
  • Don’t sleep in the same bed as your baby if you smoke, drink or take drugs or are extremely tired, if your baby was born prematurely or was of low birth-weight
  • Avoid letting your baby get too hot
  • Don’t cover your baby’s face or head while sleeping or use loose bedding

To avoid accidents remove all pillows, soft bedding, cot bumpers and soft toys from the cot.

We swaddled Isla for the first few months as she constantly woke herself up with the startle reflex but now she’s done with swaddles we knew the best choice would be to put her in a GroBag to sleep! They work closely with the lullaby trust and are incredibly safe. Every GroBag comes with a thermometer and a guide to what your baby should be wearing when she sleeps which is useful for all us nervous first time Mum’s! 😉

Moving Isla into her own room filled me with so much dread, and I really didn’t think it would! It’s hardly like she was moving far, only across the hallway, still I couldn’t help but be incredibly nervous! I even kept her cot in our room for the first few days just incase I chickened out and had to move her back. I even had the baby monitor on next to me so I could keep checking up on her! Luckily, there was nothing to worry about & we all loved it! No more waking every time she rolled over or coughed! I felt like I finally got a proper nights sleep for the first time in months and Isla slept beautifully in her GroBag.

Just checking out her stylish new sleeping bag! 🙂

The GroCompany very kindly sent Isla this beautiful Kissing Rabbits GroBag to try out and we love it! An exclusive design collaboration, this Grobag features a funky Anorak print inspired by the great outdoors. Seeing as Isla is bunny obsessed I thought it would be the perfect choice for her!

Isla’s nursery has come together really well & is exactly what I’d hoped it would be! I wanted it to be stylish but still fun for her to play in.

This limited edition print is from the first Harry Potter film – and was art work in Harry’s nursery in Godrick Hollow! A little bit of my childhood that I’m hoping Isla will love just as much…

As you can see Isla is thrilled with her big girl room & her new GroBag! Almost two months have passed & she’s now finally sleeping through the night! (I can’t believe I just said that out loud… She’ll wake up 10 times tonight now I’m sure…!) 😉

We absolutely love the GroCompany and all their brilliant products! We also use their GroEgg Thermometer which is great for feeling confident that your little one is sleeping in the perfect temperature nursery.

Earlier in the year – when we were barely 12 weeks pregnant we were invited by a wonderful (and very wise) friend to go check out The Baby Show at Olympia… It’s a huge event with literally everything you could ever need for your little one all under one roof with some incredible discounts on offer. We bought all of the big things including our travel system/car seat, bottles, pump and travel cot… you name it, they have it! It was all safely delivered to our house and we saved well over £500.

Now down to my must-haves…

Sleep Time (If you manage to get any!)

The Red Castle Cocoonababy Nest is an ergonomically shaped nest which reassures baby and helps them adapt to their new surroundings, which should help to increase contentment and reduce crying. We absolutely love ours – and while it is one of the most expensive things that we bought, I can’t recommend it enough. It gives me peace of mind that she is safe in her cot at night and in the day we can take it downstairs with us & she can sleep anywhere we are! Made in France and designed to help little babies sleep longer and better, it also helps to avoid startle gastric reflex and flat head syndrome. £129.95 from John Lewis. I love products that help you to feel confident  – which is one of the most important things as a new parent – and the GroEgg Thermometer does just that. I had no idea that the chance of SIDS is higher in babies who get too hot. A room temperature of 16-20°C is recommended, which to me feels cold, so this little egg has been brilliant to reassure me that it is right & best for Isla. It also doubles as a night light which really is essential when you are trying to breast feed in the pitch black at 4am…

Feeding

Whether you are breast feeding, bottle feeding or mixing it up – these should make your life a little easier.
We got an amazing discount on the Philips Avent Natural Bottle Set from The Baby Show including the steriliser and breast pump as part of a huge pack. They have been completely brilliant & Isla latches on perfectly. I’ve been pumping so my partner can join in on the feeding & the pump has been so comfortable and easy to use. I slightly regret not buying a double pump, as I feel like I’m attached to that machine for ages at a time. I’d love to try a Medela Swing Double Pump as I’ve heard incredible things!

The Medela Nipple Shields have been my biggest life saver so far – they take away 99% of the discomfort, are so comfortable and make it easier for her to latch on properly without hurting me. They come with a little case so you can take them with you wherever you go.

Phillips Avent also do the most amazing ‘Breast Shells‘ which comfortably collect excess breast milk from leaking and save you from waking up in the night covered in it! I had no idea these were even a ‘thing’ but my very sweet partner researched everything he could to make me more comfortable and stumbled upon them!

5-adventures

For you

I knew recovery after giving birth was going to be difficult but I hadn’t realised just how strange my body would feel as it tries to adapt and re-align to not having this huge weight to carry around. My stomach hurt and ached with every move & my ribs felt bizarre for a good few days as they started to expand again. The best thing I found to combat this was to get as much support as possible – wearing a bump band helped me feel comfortable and supported all day. Also getting a nursing bra with lots of stretch especially around the ribs helps to keep you breathing comfortably. I got both from Mothercare for under £20 each.

A few packs of super soft sleep suits and a million nappies and you are all set to survive your first week… Don’t forget to look after yourself too! Plenty of water, good food and rest as much as you can!

If you want to win two tickets for The Baby Show on the 23rd – 25th October at Olympia, London head over & ‘Like’ my Facebook page – then leave a comment telling me what you would most like to buy at The Baby Show!
